First prize in the prestigious "Building of the Year 2024" ranking goes to the "Perperikon" archaeological complex!

The project for the Perperikon archaeological complex in Kardzhali Municipality, which was awarded first prize for its efforts in the restoration and socialization of the site, represents an important step in the preservation and display of Bulgaria's cultural and historical heritage. This unique project combines archaeology, architecture and modern technologies to create a competitive tourist attraction in the region.

United efforts for the restoration of "Perperikon"

The project was implemented by the DZZD consortium "Perperikon 2020", consisting of two leading companies:

    • "BIAD - S" Ltd.
    • Stroyinvestconsult Sofia EOOD
    • Kardzhali Municipality as a contracting authority.

These companies have combined their experience and expertise to implement an ambitious restoration and socialization initiative that will have long-term significance for the development of tourism and the preservation of the archaeological finds of Perperikon.

Project team and management

The Perperikon Archaeological Complex project was realized thanks to the exceptional professionalism and dedication of the entire team, led by:

  • Eng. Vanina Galinova – project manager, whose leadership and strategic vision were essential for the successful implementation of the project.
  • Eng. Denis Karanaidenov – a technical manager, who with his expertise and attention to detail guarantees the high quality of the construction and installation works.
  • Lubo Vodenicharov – head of the restoration and conservation team, who ensured the authenticity of the restored structures, adhering to international ethical standards in restoration.

Location and historical significance

"Perperikon" is located in the picturesque area of the Eastern Rhodopes, at the foot of the village Upper Fortress, about 15 km northeast of the city of Kardzhali. The complex has a long and remarkable history, associated with ancient civilizations and cult practices dating back to the Thracian period. Active archaeological excavations in the region began in 2000 and continue to this day, with discoveries annually expanding the understanding of the significance of this archaeological site.

Project objectives

The aim of the project is to create competitive tourist attraction, ensuring the long-term preservation and socialization of the archaeological structures of "Perperikon". This includes:

  • Restoration and conservation of important architectural elements and artifacts.
  • Socialization of the object, which includes modern architectural solutions and infrastructure for an easier visit for tourists.
  • Exposure of the historical elements so that they can be easily accessible and understood by visitors, while preserving the authenticity and integrity of the site.

Main activities in the project

  1. Restoration and conservation of archaeological sites

The project includes the restoration of key historical structures, with particular attention paid to authenticity and the materials, used in the restoration. The methods and products used comply with the highest international standards in restoration and conservation.

  • Small palace, Turbe (mausoleum of an Ottoman general) and Representative building are part of the main sites that are undergoing restoration and conservation procedures.
  • Medieval church and "Nymphaeum" Reservoir, which reveal ceremonial cult practices and buildings of high historical value, were also included in the restoration process.
  • The Early Christian Basilica with a narthex and a large atrium, it is one of the largest uncovered cult complexes in the region and is undergoing extensive restoration.
  1. Socialization of the object

Creating comfortable conditions for visitors is a key part of the project. Catwalks and panoramic platforms were built to provide easy access and full visualization of the site without affecting the original structures.

  • Benches with pergolas, children's facilities and information signs complement the infrastructure and create conditions for a comfortable stay and an enriched experience for visitors.
  • Protective coatings have also been developed to protect archaeological finds from weather conditions, while ensuring the safety of tourists.
  1. Infrastructure and modern technologies
  • Electrical power supply, lighting, video surveillance and lightning protection installations are built to ensure the safety of the site and the comfort of visitors.
  • The archaeological complex is equipped with modern technologies for video surveillance and access control, which guarantees both the security of the site and the smooth passage of tourists.

 

The Perperikon Archaeological Complex Project is not only an effort to restore historical structures, but also an important step in preserving Bulgaria's cultural heritage. The combination of natural and cultural heritage in this unique site creates a new tourist destination that will continue to inspire generations of tourists and history lovers.
